چکیده

Psychrophiles are extremophilic bacteria or archaea which are cold-loving, having an optimal temperature for growth at about 158C or lower, a maximal temperature for growth at about 208C and a minimal temperature for growth at 08C or lower. Psychrotrophs are cold-tolerant bacteria or archaea that have the ability to grow at low temperatures, but have optimal and maximal growth temperatures above 15 and 208C, respectively. The Earth has extensive cold ecosystems that do not reach temperatures greater than 58C (e.g. worldwide deep oceans, polar surface, polar ice-cap regions, permafrost). Psychrophiles and psychrotrophs are cold-loving extremophiles adroitly adapted to these environmental conditions, and are often capable of enduring extended periods of cryobiosis.

Growth of psychrophilic bacteria.

On the basis of the temperature range in which growth can occur, bacteria are usually divided into 3 groups, namely: thermophiles, mesophiles, and psychrophiles (sometimes called cryophiles or rhigophiles). Thermophiles have temperature optima (generally quite close to temperature maxima) 10 to 25 degrees above the temperature optima of mesophiles. Thermophiles and mesophiles are easily disting...

Effect of lactic acid concentration on growth on meat of Gram-negative psychrotrophs from a meatworks.

The inhibitory effect of the lactic acid in meat on gram-negative psychrotrophs appears to be due mainly to the decrease in pH, not to action of the undissociated acid. Species of Pseudomonas were essentially unaffected by the pH of normal meat. Other gram-negative psychrotrophs isolated from a meatworks included a large number of strains which would not grow on meat of normal pH at chill tempe...

Evidence for psychrophiles outnumbering psychrotolerant marine bacteria in the springtime coastal Arctic

During a springtime study of pelagic microbial activities in the coastal Alaskan Arctic (Chukchi Sea, June 1998), a selective serial dilution technique was used to estimate the relative abundance of cold-loving (psychrophilic) and cold-tolerant (psychrotolerant or psychrotrophic) pelagic bacteria at four stations representing different stages of an algal bloom. Psychrophiles were numerically do...

Coliforms, enterococci, thermodurics, thermophiles, and psychrophiles in untreated farm pond waters.

Untreated waters from ten farm ponds located in central, north central, southeastern, and southwestern Ohio were examined for numbers of coliforms, enterococci, thermodurics, thermophiles, and psychrophiles. The median population densities per 100 ml water for all ponds were: coliforms, 23; enterococci, 3.6; thermodurics, 6,000; thermophiles, 450; psychrophiles, 1,000. The results indicate that...

Taxonomy of psychrophilic strains of Bacillus.

The morphological and physiological characteristics of 20 isolates of psychrophilic Bacillus were compared with 29 strains representing nine species of mesophilic Bacillus and 2 strains of Sporosarcina ureae to determine the taxonomic position of the psychrophiles. The psychrophiles formed four distinct groups which were sufficiently different from the mesophiles to warrant their designation as...
